SARAH COLBOURNE
Artist Statement
My work is a personal reflection and interpretation of my immediate environment , of the South Downs and Sussex coast.Â
Drawing is central to my practice and observational sketches are made in situ when out walking. This allows a direct and intuitive interaction with the experience of being in the landscape. I'm interested in  the built up history of a place and the interplay of the past and the present. I'm drawn to boundaries, fragments, paths, lines and imprints in the land. The drawings are then reworked, away from the setting and allowed to evolve through the process of building up the surface with paint by reorganising , adding and subtracting layers and marks. Time and change are embedded in the process.
The work is pared down and becomes about the memory and sensory experience of being in a place, remembering colour  forms and shapes.
